The history of the Jerusalem Cross

Also called the Fivefold Cross or cross-and-crosslets, the Jerusalem Cross consists of one large central cross surrounded by four smaller crosses. It became closely associated with the medieval Kingdom of Jerusalem and remains an important Christian and Holy Land symbol.

The design has several traditional interpretations:

The large cross may represent Jesus Christ, with the four smaller crosses representing the four Evangelists.
The four smaller crosses may symbolize spreading the Gospel to the four corners of the world.
The five crosses together are also commonly understood to represent the Five Wounds of Christ.

Because these interpretations developed across different Christian traditions, the Jerusalem Cross continues to represent faith, sacrifice, evangelism, pilgrimage, and a connection to the Holy Land.
